Te Whare Awhina is the whānau accommodation on the Auckland City Hospital site in Grafton. It is short stay, and it is primarily for whānau of patients who live outside greater Auckland. Whānau who live in Auckland are considered case by case. Patients themselves are not eligible. The maximum is three whānau members. Book only by referral. Ask the nurse or He Kamaka Waiora, then use the phone button on this listing.
What Te Whare Awhina provides
Bedding, towels and laundry facilities are provided. A kitchen is available. Families supply their own food. A bond is required on registration. A fee may be charged if you are not eligible for a Ministry of Health subsidy. Starship and Te Whatu Ora patient pages describe the same rules. This is not a motel, not Domain Lodge, and not Ronald McDonald House. Domain Lodge is the Cancer Society lodge and gives priority to cancer patients. Ronald McDonald House is for families of children in hospital and has its own referral path.
Because patients cannot stay here, do not plan this room as the patient’s bed. The patient remains on the ward. The room is for whānau who meet the entry test. If you are a parent of a child at Starship, ask the Starship team about Ronald McDonald House as well, because the eligibility is different.
How to book Te Whare Awhina
All bookings are by referral. Use the phone button after the ward has agreed you should be considered. Do not arrive at the hospital entrance and ask for a key. Bring food, because the kitchen is not a supplied dining room. Ask what the bond covers, whether a subsidy applies to your district, and how many nights you have been given. The stay is short term.
What to bring
Food, any medicines whānau need, and the referral details. Hospital Wi-Fi in some areas is Hospital Hot Spot. Parking is the hospital visitor car park, with the same hourly charges and top-level lift limit described on the Auckland City Hospital listing.
Planning the stay
Confirm eligibility before you travel. Auckland residents are not automatic. Three is the maximum. Te Whare Awhina will not take the patient as a guest. If the referral is refused, ask the ward about Domain Lodge or Ronald McDonald House only if you meet those rules.
